I worked as an assistant photographer in Hong Kong when I was 16, my boss then shot mostly medium format, more precisely 645 format. I usually got stuck with the EOS 1 taking back up pictures, but once in a while I'll get to play with his Mamiya 645 PRO LT. It was an amazing camera to work with, while I didn't get to shoot with it much, I've handle and set it up a lot and I know how to reload it's film magazine in under 30 seconds :) Well ever since that summer job, I've always wanted to get a 645 PRO LT of my own. I spend quite a bit of time thinking about getting one some time in the near fulture, since I really want to start taking pictures in medium format. But to be honest I haven't shot a single roll of film since I did my video last year, I've pretty much gone all digital.

So the idea of dropping almost $2500 on a film camera and lenses makes even less sense to me now as it was when I was actually shooting a lot of pictures on flim. But then the idea of something like the Leaf Digital backs is becoming appealing to me, to have a camera that can do 6x4.5cm, 35mm, Polaroid and digital is deffinately a plus, and if it is a 645 PRO LT? Then even better. But of course price is going to be stupidly insane and unless I suddenly become stupidly rich or decide to become a photographer I just can't justify anything like that. But if it does happen, if I can afford to get a medium format camera, it'll be the Mamiya 645.

Why no interest in Hasselblad you ask? Well, I don't really know Hasselblad, I know they are good cameras but I've never really worked with them, I've really enjoyed working with the Mamiya 645 and that experience really stuck with me. Maybe if I get to try one out, I may change my mind. Now I just have to find someone who does own a Hasselbald AND is cool about letting me check it out.

Heh, I often forget how much I loved photography and have always wondered why I never took that scholarship to RIT to study photography instead.

Oh right, it's in Rochester, upstate New York...

Holy shit! Their digital camera rentals are expensive! $250/day to take out a D1! I guess it's not what they rent most. Hummm but then their Hasselblad 503CX with a 80-2.8mm lense is $30/day. Worth thinking about.

645? 645 - it seems too close to 35mm to be worth the money. Medium format gets fun i think with 6x6 - square rules... I hear 6x7 (mmm, Pentax 67, or better yet Mamiya 67 is their square rangefinder), and even 6x9 is pretty hot too. E.P. Levine over on Dry Dock Ave rents MF - on the weekends I hear you can get a pretty sweet setup for like 40 or 50 bucks - check it out. I have a Hassey I built of parts off ebay - old 500C - its a great little camera, just need to find a prism for it, the WLF can be a little annoying. Anyway if you want to mess with MF for less - check out ebay, and to go really inexpensive, pick up an old Yashicamat TLR - I shot on my dad's for a while - it was great, his even had a meter (something my current Hassey doesn't even have... at least with the finder I have). Anyway, if you don't want to drop the bucks - go rent a system for a weekend at Levine's. (www.eplevine.com). (Come on, you guys KNEW i'd comment this time)
